Hisaishi, Joe – Summer

This song is famous as the theme song for the movie “The Summer of Kikujiro” directed by Takeshi Kitano.

The song has a refreshing melody that reminds you of a summer day, and the open-hearted sound is very pleasant to the ear.

The song has been used in various TV programs and commercials.

Joe Hisaishi is known for his work on the music for Studio Ghibli’s movies (such as “Princess Mononoke”), which are also known overseas.

T-SQUARE – TRUTH

This is a song by the instrumental band T-SQUARE, which calls itself a pop instrumental band and is known as one of the leading jazz fusion bands in Japan because of its high-level performance skills.

The arrangement with the trademark saxophone and wind synthesizer in the foreground, and the tense and speedy tune are sure to get anyone excited.

Hakase, Taro – Jounetsu Tairiku

This is the main theme of the TV program “Jounetsu Tairiku”, which focuses on the lives of people active in various industries.
*Jonetsu = Passion, Tairiku = Continent

The melody, which conveys the passion and feelings of the person, is expressed with a hot Latin beat and an extended violin tone.

It is one of Taro Hakase’s most famous songs.

Yellow Magic Orchestra – RYDEEN

This is a music unit that focused on techno from the time of its inception, when the world was opening its eyes to it, and introduced it as a culture from Japan.

This song, released in 1979, may sound cheap now, but it was the most advanced sound of its time.

Sakamoto, Ryuichi – Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

Ryuichi Sakamoto, who became famous for his work with YMO(Yellow Magic Orchestra), has since produced original and innovative works as a solo artist.

This song, which was used as the theme song for the movie “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” directed by Nagisa Oshima, has an impressive single note and a somehow sad melody that sounds like the snow falling on Christmas.

As a side note, Takeshi Kitano, who I mentioned earlier, appears in this movie.

Hotei, Tomoyasu – Black Ships

Torayasu Hotei is the great guitarist of BOOWY, which exploded in popularity in Japan in the 80’s.

He performed at the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympics. He also played at the closing ceremony of the Atlanta Olympics.
He provided the song “Battle Without Honor or Humanity” for Quentin Tarantino’s movie “Kill Bill”, which is also famous as the theme song for the movie.

In this live video, he plays the main phrase of “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence”, which I mentioned earlier.

Sawano, Hiroyuki – UNICORN

This is an orchestral piece written for the anime Mobile Suit Gundam UC.

The composer, Hiroyuki Sawano, mainly composes game and anime music, but this song is dramatic due to the weight of the orchestra and chorus.

Uehara, Hiromi – Voice

Hiromi Uehara is a jazz pianist who performs outside Japan under the name “Hiromi”.

She graduated from Berklee College of Music with a B.A. in Jazz Composition and won the 53rd Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album”.

She is one of the most energetic and active Japanese jazz players in the world.

南米やアフリカまで手広く集めてはいませんが、今でもふと聴きたくなる曲がいくつかあります。この記事では、邦楽・洋楽・ジャンルを問わず、私が一聴して虜にされたインストゥルメンタル曲をご紹介します。

良く紹介される超がつく有名曲は極力排除しました。隠れた名曲をお楽しみ下さい。

ポップ・ロック系

Mecano – 1917

スペインのポップバンド、メカーノのインスト曲。

1991年に発表されたアルバムAidalaiに収録されています。アルバム収録曲の中でこの曲だけ異質で浮いているという変なアルバム。

イントロの重い雰囲気から想像できない展開で主旋律に突入し、そこからはストリングスで厚みを増した中にシンセのフワフワと浮いたリズミカルな演奏が続く逸品です。

松井常松 – AIR

BOØWYの不動のダウンピッキング・マシーン・ベーシスト、松井常松。

BOØWY解散後、1991年に自身名義で発表したSONG OF JOYに収録されています。

アルバム全体的にベーシストの曲とは思えずアンビエント調で、ベースにフォーカスを当てた曲はありません。個人的に松井常松のアルバムで１番好きです。

このAIRは、アンビエントは退屈と思われる方にも聞きやすいアレンジがされています。無料で聞く事ができる音源が無いのでAmazon Musicをリンクしました。AmazonやSpotify会員の方は是非フル視聴してみて下さい。

EXTREME – Midnight Express

米ハードロック・ファンならお馴染みEXTREME。

この曲はアコギのインスト曲で、ギタリストでありコンポーザーのNuno Bettencourtの演奏技術とセンスに痺れる、疾走感溢れる名曲です。

1995年、Waiting For The Punchlineに収録。

The Michael Schenker Group – Captain Nemo

これもハードロック・ファンなら有名ですが、マイケルシェンカー率いるＭＳＧが1983年に発表したBuilt To Destroy(邦題:限りない戦い)に収録。

Steve Vai – Erotic Nightmares

変態ギタリスト、スティーブ・ヴァイの曲。

スティーブ・ヴァイは、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンが抜けた後のAlcatrazzやWhitesnake、Ozzy Osbourne等の有名バンドの後任ギタリストを務めた事が多く、いずれのバンドも彼のカラーに染まってしまう為、賛否あるでしょうが私は好きです。偉大なロック・ギタリスト。

1990年、アルバムPassion And Warfareに収録。

テクノ・ハウス・エレクトロニカ系

インストゥルメンタルと言うと、どうしてもこのジャンルが多くなってしまいます。

Deee-Lite – Build The Bridge

テイ・トウワが加入したDeee-Lite。1990年発表のWorld Cliqueに収録されています。

Deee-Liteの基本ジャンルはハウスですが、ハウスの中でも唯一無二のグループとなったのはテイ・トウワの功績が大きく影響しています。紹介した曲とは異なりますが、映画チャーリーズ・エンジェルでDeee-Liteの曲が使用されたので、曲を聞いた事はあるという方はいらっしゃるグループだと思います。

テイ・トウワといえば、坂本龍一のラジオ番組にデモテープを送っていた事で有名で、2014年からは高橋幸宏、小山田圭吾、砂原良徳達とMETAFIVEとして活動しています。

今田耕司がKOJI1200名義で出したナウ・ロマンティックが一般的にはテイ・トウワ作品の中で知られていると思いますが、テイ・トウワはキワモノではなく、イケてるDJであります。聴きに行った事がありますけど、良かったです。

808 State – Techno Bell

イギリスのテクノ・バンド、８０８ステイト。

1991年、アルバムex:elに収録。

808 Stateの初期のアルバムはAmazon Musicでは配信されていないですが、ex:el はSpotifyでは聴けます。テクノ入門にもってこいの名盤です。

µ-Ziq – Lunatic Harness

µ-Ziqと書いて、ミュージック。

出だしから変態感が滲み出してて面白いです。µ-Ziqことマイク・パラディナスの代表曲と言っても過言では無い出来の１曲。

1997年、アルバムLunatic Harnessに収録。

Röyksopp – Eple

テクノ・エレクトリカ系で調べたら名盤と評価される事が多いRöyksoppのMelody A.M.。その中からEpleをセレクト。

2001年、アルバムMelody A.M.に収録。

坂本龍一 – Great Africa

教授の曲は初期の方が好きですが、有名所は外すというコンセプトなので退屈な曲が多くなった2000年代からセレクト。

ミニマル調ですが、聞けば聞くほどスルメ曲。

2002年、アルバムEEPHANTISMに収録。

クラシック、サントラ、その他

澤野弘之 – UNICORN

2010年、機動戦士ガンダムUC オリジナルサウンドトラック収録。

作曲者の澤野弘之はゲーム・アニメ音楽の作曲をメインとした方ですが、この曲はオーケストラとコーラスの重厚感によりドラマチックな曲となっています。

アニメのサントラねぇ、、と捉えられる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、このサントラからは「RX-0」等、素晴らしい曲が多く収録されています。

テクノ／ダンス系

洋楽・邦楽等、色々な音楽を有名曲から隠れた名曲まで、今後少しずつ紹介していきたいと思います。初回の今回は、テクノ／ダンス系を聴かない人でも知っている有名曲を８選しました。

人の好みは様々。テクノ系はあんまり、という方もいらっしゃると思いますが、ＣＭ等で耳にする機会が多いジャンルです。

Fatboy Slim / Because We Can

Ｍ－１グランプリの出囃子で使用されています。ブレイクビーツの始祖にあたるFatboy Slimの名曲。

アルバム「The Greatest Hits Remixed」の最終曲に収録。

Fatboy Slim / Right Here, Right Now

同じくFatboy Slimから。日産のＣＭで使われていました。

Fatboy Slimの代表曲で、アルバム「You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby」の１曲目に収録。

Beck / Sexx Laws

フジテレビの「ジャンクＳＰＯＲＴＳ」で使用。２０１８年から再レギュラー放送されていますが、再レギュラー放送は１度も観ていないので、今も使われているかは知りません。

Beckはフォーク・ブルースがルーツにありますが、オルタナティブ、ファンク、エレクトロニカとあらゆるジャンルの楽曲を作っていて、アルバム毎に違う色を出す稀有なミュージシャンで私は好きです。

メジャーデビューアルバムの「Melow Gold」に収録されている「Loser」は歌詞、曲ともに素晴らしいです。

「Midnite Vultures」の1曲目に収録。

Underworld / Born Slippy (Nuxx)

こちらは日産のＣＭで使われていました。テクノ系で長めの曲ですが、トランス系で聴いているとスルメのように良くなってくるUnderworldの代表曲です。曲調が変わる少し前を再生開始位置にしましたが、ＣＭで使われていたのは、ここより少し前の所なので０秒から聴いた方がわかりやすいかもしれません。

「Second Toughest In The Infants」に収録。

LMFAO / Party Rock Anthem

何で流れていたかは忘れましたが、１度は聴いたことがあるのではないでしょうか？LMFAOの軽いノリは、たまに聴きたくなります。 

「Sorry For Party Rocking」の３曲目に収録。

The Chemical Brothers / Hey Boy Hey Girl

タイアップやＣＭで流れていた記憶は無いので「絶対に聴いた事のある」からは外れますが、”ＳＴＡＹ ＨＯＭＥ“で気分を上げたい時にオススメしたい１曲として選びました。

「Surrender」の９曲目に収録。

Yellow Magic Orchestra / RYDEEN

運動会の入場曲の定番と言えば、この「RYDEEN」とアニメ「一休さん」のオープニング曲ですね。 (私の小学校限定の定番曲であろう。。)

YMOは、私がテクノ系を好きになったルーツです。前期～後期まで素晴らしい。

アンビエント調アレンジ版の「RYDEEN 79/07」はキリンビールのＣＭで使われていましたが、この原曲の方が「テクノ！」で好きです。高橋幸宏氏作曲のＹＭＯ代表曲の１つ。

「Solid State Survivor」の２曲目に収録。

Zedd / Beautiful Now

自動車メーカーSUBARUのＣＭで最近まで流れていた曲です。ジャンルで言うとEDM(Electronic Dance Music) になります。Zeddはアルバム通して良質な曲が揃っています。

「True Colors」の３曲目に収録。
